Girl Survivors Of Boko Haram And Military Abuses In North-East Nigeria

[ 2 minutes to read]

In our series closely following the Almajiri crisis, we now wish to draw your attention to another heartbreaking tragedy unfolding in northeastern Nigeria.

After surviving years of abuse by Boko Haram and the Nigerian forces, girls and young women continue to face unimaginable challenges. Despite their bravery and resilience, reintegration support and justice remain heartbreakingly out of reach.

According to a new report by Amnesty International released draws from 126 interviews, 76 of which are with girls and young women who were children when they endured the brutalities of Boko Haram. These testimonies expose violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses, not only by Boko Haram but also by the Nigerian authorities during the conflict in north-east Nigeria.

These girls’ stories are marked by profound suffering. Boko Haram forced many of them into “marriages,” condemning them to years of domestic servitude, sexual violence, forced pregnancies, and trafficking. Some of the interviewees even gave birth as children themselves-bearing children conceived through horrific violence. Boko Haram’s crimes against these innocent girls, including using them as suicide bombers, have been met with near-total impunity.

Despite the overwhelming danger, many of these girls risked everything to escape Boko Haram’s control. But even in freedom, their struggles were far from over. The Nigerian military unlawfully detained many of them, subjecting them to further torment in inhumane conditions. Others were stigmatized by their communities, and left without the medical, educational, or legal support they desperately need.

Their suffering continues, even today. These girls have unique and pressing needs stemming from their time in captivity, but the Nigerian government has failed to provide the healthcare, education, and justice they deserve.
