Georgina has been on the run for 16 years, can we help her settle down?
Georgina is an intersex, HIV-positive refugee woman who has been fleeing persecution for over 16 years. She currently survives by moving between countries on short-term tourist visas, as no country she can access grants refugee protection or legal residency, none are signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention.
Her Egyptian passport expires in september 2026, but six months before that, she will already lose the ability to travel. Without a legal solution soon, she risks becoming stateless or being forcibly deported to Egypt, where she faces certain imprisonment due to her gender identity, past convictions, and refusal to join the military.
There are two possible ways to stabilize her situation: first, completing her gender-confirming surgery, which would allow her to change the gender marker in her passport and have charges against her dropped; second, starting an educational program in Thailand, which would give her at least a year of legal stay to prepare for long-term relocation. Until UNHCR succeeds in resettling her in a safe country, Georgina urgently needs support to cover her monthly living costs: rent, food, medical care, and legal documentation.

Because of her hormone treatment and HIV medication, Georgina’s monthly costs are relatively high. Since she can not settle down, she is forced to stay in cheap hostels and eat outdoors. Just 50 people donating 10 or 15 usd per month would keep her alive, until a final solution is found.

Because she has never been treated properly for her intersex condition, Georgina needs hormone injections regularly, and has medical problems that can be solved with a gender conforming operation. An extra benefit of the operation will be, that she can change her gender in her passport, and Egypt as a country, and the military, wouldn’t want her back. So it is not a final solution, but at least it prevents her from being deported to Egypt. To finance the operation we started a separate crowdfunding on GoFundMe.
