    Our Story:
We established the Afghan Atheist Organization (AAO) around 3 years back. We could expand our members to about 30 people including man and women during this period.

Even though; the expansion and activities of atheism was prohibited in Afghanistan during the previous government, due to the relative freedom that people had and the existence of human rights and other international organizations we could follow our activities in the shadow. But with Taliban’s current regime coming to power and the very strict rules imposed on the religious beliefs of the people we were forced to stop our activities. It is because based upon the Taliban’s Sharia law our punishment is a direct death penalty.

With Taliban’s takeover of the government in the country suppression and punishment of religious minorities and LGBTQ organizations reached its peak. Unfortunately, this news doesn’t get broadcasted outside the country as Taliban have strict censorship authorities over the media in the country.

Around a month back we got to know that one of the members of our organization was arrested by Taliban for apostasy. Yet, we know nothing about his fate and well-being. Since the happening of this incident, we have lost our contacts with majority of our members from across the country. Currently, only 8 of us are in contact with each other.

After the arrest of one of our members by Taliban, none of us is feeling secure in Afghanistan. All of us are living in secret places and constantly changing our locations every once in a while. It is because there is a possibility that Taliban may know about our identity and locations through the abovementioned person.

We have tried to get out of Afghanistan due to the danger that is threatening our lives. However; we have yet failed to do so. We are hopeful to find an exit way.
