Despite the name “Muhammad” being stamped onto her passport, Amanya remains who she has always been: a resilient intersex woman.
A Flight from War and Kin
The outbreak of the Sudanese Civil War in 2023 as documented by international observers did not just bring the threat of falling bombs. For Amanya, it weaponized her family’s disdain. Her family has alleged connections to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and they have used this influence to threaten her life. If she were to return or be found, she faces the very real prospect of being killed or falsely accused of collaboration.
In 2024, Amanya fled to Egypt, but the “safety” of Cairo is a thin veil. Her brother, a transgender man, has intensified his harassment, claiming that Amanya’s biological traits are somehow rightfully his. Amanya reports that her family has even discussed taking her body parts or organs to facilitate her brother’s transition. She is currently living in hiding in Faisal City, her residency permit expired, her movements restricted by the constant fear of being hunted down by those who should have been her protectors.
