In Egypt, she met Amna, and what began as a chance encounter at a community support center blossomed into a profound, life-saving love. Both women had separately walked away from the religious dogmas of their upbringing, choosing instead the difficult path of freethought and personal conviction.
Their bravery, however, came with a devastating price. In early March, while at a clinic seeking medical care for Amna’s chronic mental health needs, they were ambushed. Amna’s family, who had been monitoring her movements, took her by force, dragging her back into a life of domestic captivity and forced religious rituals. For weeks, Shouq lived in a state of constant, agonizing alert, wearing disguises to monitor the house where her partner was being held. It was only through a daring escape under the cover of night that Amna was able to reunite with Shouq. Today, they are finally together in a new, hidden location, but the shadow of their pursuers remains close.
The Architecture of Oppression
The crisis Shouq and Amna face is not merely a “family dispute.” It is a direct result of systemic persecution against those who dare to claim intellectual and bodily autonomy in regions where apostasy and non-conformity are treated as crimes. In many societies, leaving the faith of one’s birth is seen as a betrayal that justifies “correction” through violence, forced marriage, or indefinite confinement.
When the state or the family unit becomes an agent of religious enforcement, individuals like Shouq and Amna have nowhere to turn. Local authorities often view these life-threatening situations as private domestic matters, leaving freethinkers and LGBTQ+ individuals completely unprotected. - Connectivity and Mobility: Reliable internet to maintain contact with support networks and safe transportation to avoid public harassment or recognition.
