Nigeria investigates two suspected Ebola cases in the northeast

Nigerian health authorities are examining two suspected Ebola cases in the northeast, about ten days after the country confirmed its first case in more than a decade. Both people are in isolation while contacts are traced and laboratory tests are run. Officials stress that a suspected case is not a confirmed one. The wider outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, has killed more than 5,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and there is no approved vaccine or treatment for this strain.

Outbreaks are where rumours, miracle cures and blame spread fastest, so calm, evidence-based public health communication is exactly what freethinkers should amplify.
