URGENT: Mumino Faces Apostasy Trial After Losing Everything – #10

[ 2 minutes to read]

After losing his wife, being separated from his stepdaughter, and fleeing for his life, Mumino now faces what might be the final blow: he is back in prison in Somalia, this time charged with apostasy and harming his late wife. If convicted, he could face years in prison, or worse.

His story has always been a difficult one. But now, as even lawyers hesitate to represent him, he stands almost completely alone. We must act fast.

We need urgent funding to cover his legal defense and basic protection.

From Despair to Hope, and Back to a Cell

Earlier this year, Mumino was jailed under vague accusations. After weeks of effort and help from supporters, he was released on bail. But freedom was temporary. In June, he tried to escape with his daughter to Ethiopia. Just before boarding the plane, we asked: “Is there any risk they won’t let you go?”

“There is no risk, sir,” he replied.

Then, silence. Ten days without a word.

We feared the worst, and we were right. He had been arrested again, this time under charges far more serious: apostasy and causing harm to his deceased wife. These charges are not just unjust, they are potentially deadly. In Somalia, apostasy is socially and informally treated as a capital offense, and courtrooms are not immune to clan pressures, bribes, or threats.

His wife’s family had never accepted that she ran away with him to Uganda. They later took back Mumino’s stepdaughter, and now, after the tragic death of his wife, they are determined to crush him in court.

Who Is Mumino, and Why Are We Fighting for Him?

This is his story in pictures.

Mumino is a Somali man who defied expectations and followed his heart. He believed his wife deserved freedom. They fled together from family and religious pressure. After she died from illness, he returned to Somalia to give her a dignified burial and rescue their daughters.

Instead, he was accused, hunted, and jailed.

  • He has already lost his wife.
  • He has been separated from one daughter.
  • Now, he risks losing the last thing he lives for: his youngest daughter.

Even his lawyer refuses to hand over the charges. He has no voice, no safety, no certainty that his judge is neutral. But he still has hope, because of people like you.
