Mass unreason: a Nigerian columnist on how dogma excuses cruelty

Writing in Premium Times, Umar Yakubu argues that Nigeria is sliding into a moral climate where cruelty is excused, justified or even cheered online. Borrowing Hannah Arendt's analysis of Eichmann, he shows how people who see themselves as decent can still help normalise harm. On Facebook, he notes, sympathy for victims of mob violence and extrajudicial killings is filtered through ethnicity, religion, region and party, and algorithms reward the angriest reactions.
His remedies are concrete: prosecute those who incite mob justice, push platforms such as Meta towards better design and local moderation, and ask religious and civic leaders to promote fairness and restraint. For freethinkers it is a sharp reminder that dogma is dangerous less because of what it claims than because of whom it teaches us to stop seeing as human.
