Hungary’s Democracy Is Dying in Plain Sight

[ 2 minutes to read]

In an era where authoritarianism is supposed to be a relic of the past, Hungary is proving that democracy doesn’t die with a bang—it withers under strategic, calculated assaults. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his ruling Fidesz party have spent over a decade hollowing out Hungary’s democratic institutions, yet the global response remains tepid at best. How much longer will the world stand idly by as Hungary slides into an illiberal abyss?

A Government That Writes Its Own Rules

Since 2010, Orbán’s administration has systematically rewritten the democratic playbook, bending institutions to its will. By restricting the Constitutional Court’s power—most notably its ability to challenge budgetary laws—the government has dismantled one of the last checks on its authority. This isn’t just political maneuvering; it’s the deliberate consolidation of power, eroding the very concept of checks and balances.

The judiciary, the media, civil society—no institution is safe. What once were pillars of democracy are now extensions of the state’s agenda. Independent courts? Defanged. Free press? Silenced. Civic engagement? Labeled subversive. The so-called democracy Hungary parades on the world stage is little more than a Potemkin village, masking the reality of creeping authoritarianism.

Hungary’s War on Free Thought

One of the most chilling aspects of Hungary’s democratic backslide is its aggressive assault on free expression. A government that fears ideas is a government that fears its people. Under Orbán, the press has been gutted, with pro-government media dominating the landscape. Opposition voices are muzzled, independent journalists face intimidation, and dissenting opinions are drowned out by state propaganda.

It’s not just the press under siege—civil society organizations have also been targeted. Laws restricting NGOs, particularly those receiving foreign funding, have been weaponized to crush activism. Pro-democracy and human rights groups are labeled as foreign agents, a familiar authoritarian tactic used to delegitimize and dismantle opposition.

The LGBTQ+ Community: Hungary’s Latest Scapegoat

No authoritarian playbook is complete without scapegoating vulnerable communities. In Hungary, the LGBTQ+ population has become a convenient target. Recent legislative changes have rolled back their rights under the guise of “protecting Hungarian values.” These attacks aren’t just discriminatory; they serve a dual purpose—distracting the public from government failures while rallying support among nationalist hardliners.

The persecution of marginalized groups is a red flag that history has waved before. Yet, Western democracies, which claim to champion human rights, have largely responded with symbolic condemnations and little concrete action. The European Union has issued warnings, but Orbán remains emboldened. How long before other illiberal leaders take notes and follow suit?

Where Is the Global Outrage?

Hungary’s authoritarian drift should be setting off alarm bells worldwide. Instead, it’s met with a collective shrug. The EU, too entangled in bureaucracy and reluctant to punish one of its own, has allowed this crisis to fester. The United States, distracted by its own political turmoil, offers little more than platitudes.

But this is not just Hungary’s problem. When democracy is undermined in one nation, it sets a precedent for others to follow. The longer the world remains indifferent, the more we normalize the erosion of freedoms we claim to hold dear.

The time for passive concern is over. The time for action is now.
