A month ago, we shared that Georgina had to leave Thailand when her visa expired. With the help of your donations, she was able to travel to Vietnam. While Vietnam might be a paradise for tourists, it offers no safe haven for someone like Georgina—an Egyptian intersex refugee living with HIV.
Vietnam is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, and there’s no functional UNHCR support on the ground. This leaves Georgina in limbo. She receives her HIV medication, but hormone injections are painfully expensive. Her health is fragile. Her safety is uncertain. And now, at the end of this week, her visa expires—again.
Two paths are currently open:
- South Africa – Her visa application is under review. If successful, it would mark a breakthrough. South Africa is a Refugee Convention signatory and offers legal protection to vulnerable individuals like Georgina. It could finally give her the chance to stay, heal, and rebuild her life.
- Back to Thailand – If the South African option fails, Georgina will likely return to Thailand and resume her case with UNHCR there. That path remains unstable, full of costs and risks.
Your support continues to be vital. Monthly donations help cover Georgina’s food, shelter, and medical costs. One-time gifts allow us to cover flight tickets, visa applications, and work toward the ultimate goal: the gender-confirming operation that would protect her from forced return to Egypt and potential conscription.
Gratitude and Call for Continued Support:
Georgina remains incredibly grateful for every contribution made. Your ongoing involvement not only sustains her physically but provides essential emotional encouragement during this uncertain period.
