What the cold fusion fiasco still teaches about how science handles bold claims

In Quanta Magazine's Qualia essay series, George Musser revisits cold fusion after a Cambridge philosopher, Huw Price, argued that scientists were too dismissive. The 1989 claim of room-temperature fusion collapsed when labs could not replicate it, amid a fudged graph and retractions. Musser notes that a 2019 Google-backed project found no unexpected nuclear reactions, though it produced papers on hydrogen-absorbing metals.

He then turns to muon-catalysed fusion, a genuine research field that uses exotic atoms to test quantum electrodynamics. Energy breakeven would need roughly 300 reuse cycles of the muon, which most physicists doubt, but the work still enriches physics. His conclusion is that good research stays interesting even when its headline promise fails. Freethinkers can take from it how to judge extraordinary claims without sneering.
