Novaya Gazeta announces it will shut down under Kremlin pressure
[ < 1 minute to read]
Novaya Gazeta, one of the last Russian outlets to openly criticise the war in Ukraine, says it will close. Its Moscow office and servers go offline on 9 November, after which one final issue will appear. The paper blames pressure from the authorities and security services: its licence was revoked in 2022, journalists have been detained, it is being evicted and its donations platform has been shut. The newsroom museum for murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya is closing too. Part of the team continues as Novaya Gazeta Europe from Latvia.
When independent journalism disappears, so does the space to question power, which is the starting point of all free thought.
