We’ve been quiet for a while, holding our breath as the situation for one of our most resilient community members, Georgina, continues to shift. Since July, much has happened, but the core challenge securing her safety and future remains desperately urgent. We need to act now.

The Immediate Hook: Courage and a Race Against Time

Georgina is a young Egyptian intersex person whose identity as a freethinker and whose refusal to conform to restrictive gender norms forced her to flee her home country under threat of death. For years, she has been in precarious transit, a pattern of temporary reprieves followed by abrupt, forced moves. She is currently in a bustling tropical city, staying in the smallest, cheapest room she can find, a challenging, airless space that makes it hard to rest. She does this all to remain close to the UNHCR office, the only body that can grant her permanent resettlement.

Despite the relentless pressure, she took a monumental step forward this summer. Thanks to the generosity of this community, we successfully crowdfunded the first third of the cost for her medically necessary gender-affirming surgery. She has undergone the first part of the procedure, that corrects her upper body! While this isn’t the magic key to change her passport gender marker or solve all her underlying medical problems, it has given her something irreplaceable: the confidence to step out as her true self, Georgina, instead of living as “Georgio.” Her resilience in the face of systemic adversity is a testament to the freedom we fight for.

The Crisis Context & Connection: Statelessness is Knocking

The clock is ticking on an invisible, devastating threat: statelessness. Georgina’s Egyptian passport is set to expire. The local Egyptian embassy immediately turned her away, and a neighboring country’s embassy is unresponsive. Without a valid passport, she cannot renew her tourist visa after March 2026. This is not a bureaucratic hurdle; it is a life-or-death crisis. If she is not resettled before then, she will be forced to go into hiding illegally, ultimately becoming stateless, a person with no rights, no protection, and no identity in the eyes of any government.

The good news is that the UNHCR in her current location has finally upgraded her case status to urgent due to this looming passport expiration. This acknowledgment is critical, but it’s not an immediate solution. It simply means they recognize the catastrophic deadline.

Our mission at Freethinkers International is to provide a safety net for exactly these high-stakes, protracted crises. When apostasy laws, government inaction, and anti-LGBTQAI+ sentiment strip away a person’s rights and identity, we become the only reliable bridge to a life free of fear. Georgina’s story is a stark reminder that simply having ‘good thoughts’ about freedom is not enough; we must secure the physical means to sustain it.

The Solution and Immediate Need: Two Critical Fronts

We are fighting this battle on two fronts:

1. Imminent Relocation & Basic Needs: She must move again in January to a new country where the local Egyptian embassy appears more willing to consider her passport renewal request, though success is far from guaranteed. We need emergency funds for this sudden international travel and another temporary housing.
2. Gender-Affirming Surgery Completion: We are still working to raise the remaining two-thirds of the funds for the second, necessary part of her surgery. Completing this medical journey is crucial for her health and psychological well-being as she prepares for a new, stable life.

This is where the collective power of our community becomes her lifeline. Emergency costs are unpredictable, but the costs of survival, rent, food, and communication, are daily and relentless.

We know asking for a large sum is difficult, but imagine the impact of many small commitments:

• A commitment of just €10 a month, the price of a few drinks in a bar or one fast-food meal, can cover two full nights of safe shelter for Georgina or feed her for two days in a major international city.
• A handful of recurring €10 donations is what allows us to confidently budget for the long-term, continuous costs of legal support and monthly rent that her resettlement will require.
